A tyre failure on a public road — whether on a tractor, a truck, or a car — can have devastating consequences. Yet the majority of tyre failures are preventable with a simple weekly inspection that takes less than five minutes. Here is a straightforward guide to checking your tyres, whether you’re a farmer, a haulier, or a private motorist.

The 5-Point Tyre Safety Check

1. Tread Depth

The legal minimum tread depth for cars and light vans in Ireland is 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tread width. For commercial vehicles, the minimum is 1mm. However, for safe performance — particularly in wet conditions — we recommend replacing tyres before they reach these minimums. A simple test: insert a 20 cent coin into the tread groove. If you can see the gold rim of the coin, the tread is dangerously low.

2. Sidewall Condition

Inspect both sidewalls for cracks, cuts, bulges, or blisters. Any of these indicate structural damage and the tyre should be replaced immediately. Bulges in particular indicate internal damage that can cause sudden blowout.

3. Inflation Pressure

Check pressure when the tyre is cold — before the vehicle has been driven. Use a calibrated gauge, not a service station air line gauge. Under-inflation causes overheating and blowout risk; over-inflation causes centre wear and reduced grip.

4. Valve Caps

Always ensure valve caps are fitted. They protect the valve core from dirt and moisture and prevent slow leaks. Replace any missing caps immediately.

5. Overall Condition

Look for uneven wear patterns — centre wear indicates over-inflation, edge wear indicates under-inflation, and one-sided wear indicates alignment or suspension issues. Any unusual wear pattern should be investigated.
